Quick Definition

IELTS Speaking is a 11–14 minute live interview with a certified examiner, scored on four criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation — each contributing 25% to the Speaking band. Band 7 speaking requires clear fluency, varied vocabulary, mostly accurate grammar, and clear pronunciation despite accent.

IELTS Speaking Band Descriptors — Full Explanation

Three parts: Part 1 (familiar topics — 4–5 min), Part 2 (cue card monologue — 3–4 min), Part 3 (abstract discussion — 4–5 min). Common Indian test-taker weaknesses: fillers ('um', 'basically'), limited vocabulary range, direct translation errors, and over-formal speech. Practise Part 3 most — it tests abstract opinion and argumentation, where most marks are won or lost.
