Common Questions

IELTS Preparation — FAQs

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about ielts preparation.

Most UK universities require an overall IELTS band of 6.0–7.0. Top universities like Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial typically require 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5. UK Student Visa requires IELTS 5.5 (B2 UKVI). EduVed targets 7.0+ for top university applicants.
For Canadian study visa: most universities require IELTS 6.0–6.5. For Express Entry PR: CLB 9 (IELTS 7.0 in all bands) gives maximum points. Lower scores (CLB 7–8 = IELTS 6.0–6.5) still qualify. EduVed aligns IELTS prep with your specific immigration pathway.
IELTS Academic is for university admissions and professional registrations (nursing, medicine). IELTS General Training is for migration to Canada, Australia, and NZ, and for work visa applications. Both have the same Listening and Speaking sections; Reading and Writing differ in difficulty and topic.
Typically 6–12 weeks of structured preparation. EduVed's program has helped students improve by 1–2 bands in 8 weeks through diagnostic tests, targeted skill training, and weekly full mock tests. Starting from Band 5.5, reaching 6.5–7.0 in 8 weeks is realistic with consistent daily effort.
TOEFL is preferred by most US universities. IELTS is accepted but less common for the US. For UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand — IELTS is the gold standard. If you're applying to both US and non-US countries, consider taking both. EduVed advises based on your target universities.
IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is a version of IELTS that must be taken at an approved test centre and is accepted for UK visa applications. If you're applying for a UK Student Visa (under 18 months) or Skilled Worker Visa, you may need IELTS UKVI rather than standard IELTS Academic.
IELTS Speaking is assessed across 4 criteria: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation — each weighted equally. Examiners look for natural flow, vocabulary variety, grammatical complexity, and clear pronunciation — not an accent. EduVed mock speaking sessions use the same scoring rubric.
IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. After 2 years, most universities and immigration authorities will not accept the score. EduVed plans your test date to ensure validity aligns with your application deadlines.
Yes. Computer-delivered IELTS (CD IELTS) is available at most test centres and offers results in 3–5 days (vs. 13 days for paper). The Speaking component is still face-to-face with an examiner. EduVed recommends CD IELTS for students comfortable typing and with tight timelines.
The IELTS test fee in India is approximately ₹16,250–17,000 (British Council) or ₹16,000 (IDP). This includes all 4 sections. Score report can be sent to 5 organisations for free. EduVed helps you register at the nearest authorised test centre.
There is no limit on how many times you can take IELTS. You can retake it as soon as the next available test date. Most students retake once after proper preparation. EduVed recommends taking a diagnostic test and completing an 8-week preparation program before sitting the actual test.
For Australian student visa: most universities require IELTS 6.0–6.5 (with no band below 5.5–6.0). For Australia PR (skilled migration): most visa subclasses require IELTS 6.0 per band (Competent English). IELTS 7.0+ in all bands (Superior English) gives additional immigration points.
